Chapter Twelve

The carriage jumped forward as Charles cracked down on the reins, sending them out of the courtyard and back onto the lane. Gliding quickly past the gate, the carriage made a turn at the fork and headed out into the country, away from town.

There were some ruins he wanted to explore with Sophia. She clung to the railing on the tight seat meant for only one driver. She had nowhere to put her other hand as it fluttered in her lap. She kept turning her head to observe her friend like a nervous cat.

Charles didn’t mind, in fact he had purposefully made the seating arrangements so his wife would be forced to sit nearer him. He relished the forced proximity. She had been quite amiable this morning, making this new nearness more cherished. He would choose his words carefully so as not to set her off this afternoon.

“Are you concerned for your friend?” Charles asked while Sophia took another peek over her shoulder.

“No,” Sophia shook her head as she turned to peer into his eyes. “It’s just that Joanne has always been demure and guarded around gentlemen.”

The thought that she was concerned for her friend warmed his heart toward her. He would need to be careful not to show too many feelings towards his wife. His plan wouldn’t work if Sophia suspected how he really felt.

She turned her attention back to the road. “There have been plenty of gentlemen interested in Joanne over the years, but she has never encouraged any of them. I always thought she would be content living with her father.”

“Are you saying Joanne likes my brother?”

“Please, do not say anything to Adam.” Sophia’s voice became alarmed.

Charles’ lips twitched. “Do you think me a gossip?” He raised his brow.

Sophia’s look was skeptical. “I don’t know Captain. I don’t know you well enough.”

Charles chuckled in good humor. “Well said, my lady, I see your point. I hope we can remedy that over the next few months, but for now, believe me, I don’t gossip. Whatever you say to me will be kept between us, husband and wife confidence as you will.”

She turned to him once again, her eyes studying him, brilliant and intelligent. Charles could tell she wanted to bite back a scathing remark, but to her credit, she did not, choosing to remain silent, and so the truce had begun.

The wheel hit a bump in the road, causing them to fly. They hit the ground, jostling them almost out of their seats. Charles cursed under his breath as he tried to gain control over the situation. A hand grasped his thigh, sending a warmth of desire through his body. He looked down to see Sophia’s hand tightly gripping his leg. Her eyes widened as she tried to regain her seating. Charles pulled the carriage to a stop, and Sophia quickly released him. They turned to look behind them at the same time.

Joanne was tightly gripping his brother’s arm, a look of surprise on her face.

“Miss. Grant, are you hurt?” his brother asked, concern in his voice as he held Joanne’s hand in a tight grip.
